QUALIFICATIONS EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: None required
Education: High school diploma, GED or equivalent. A background in law enforcement or degree in a related field is desirable
Citizenship: Applicants must be U.S. citizens and be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment, pursuant to the requirements established in California Government Code section 1031.
Licenses: Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license or equivalent at the time of appointment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

- Incumbent must be of good moral character and able to pass a comprehensive background investigation, including an FBI fingerprint check, pursuant to California Government Code section 1030.
- Incumbent must meet the requirements of California Penal Code section 832 with respect to search, seizure and possession of a firearm.
- Incumbent must have no prior felony convictions or history of criminal behavior, pursuant to Government Code sections 1029 and 1031.
- Incumbent must have no prior history of acts of domestic violence or child abuse.
- Incumbent must have no prior history of hard drug use.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Alpine County is recruiting for the position of DEPUTY SHERIFF RECRUIT in the Alpine County Sheriff’s Department. The class of Deputy Sheriff Recruit is the beginning career ladder of the law enforcement classes. The position is a non-sworn, civilian training classification to be used while incumbents are attending a certified Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Police Academy. The P.O.S.T. approved academy, as described in and required by Section 832 of the California Penal Code, consists of intensive instruction on law enforcement procedures combined with rigorous physical training. Upon satisfactory completion of the academy training, incumbents may be sworn in as peace officers, appointed to the Deputy Sheriff I classification and begin a probationary period, including completion of a Field Training Program. Currently the essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following: attend and successfully complete the basic Police Academy; prepare for the position of Deputy Sheriff I, including obtaining a working knowledge of the basic principles of law enforcement, public safety and personal security; and participate in a standardized Field Training Program.
BENEFITS: 100% FTE in a five step salary system with advancement upon satisfactory completion of a one-year probationary period and annual increases thereafter.
- Health Insurance: County provides medical, dental and vision coverage for employees with co-payment by employees, dependent upon family status.
- Vacation: Accrued at the rate of 6.67 hours per month, or 10 vacation days per year.
- Sick Leave: Earned at the rate of 8 hours per month.
- Holidays: 16 paid holidays per year.
- Retirement: Participation in the California Public Employee Retirement System (PERS), New Members 2.7% at 57 plan (when sworn)
- Deferred Compensation: Voluntary deferred compensation program offered.
- $1,000 per year uniform allowance
- 9% POST incentive increase contingent on acquiring intermediate and advanced certificates
- 1-1/2% swing shift differential increase
- Overtime hours available as authorized by the Sheriff.
- Housing Differential. All employees who reside in Alpine County will receive a total of two hundred fifty dollars ($250) per pay period
